Mud, mayhem and machinery malfunctions!
Wednesday, 09 May 2012 13:56

More calves have been born and one with a very appropriate name -  Noah -  after all the rainfall. Although rain is desperately needed across the country it would be nice to see some blue sky and sunshine.

Our usually empty duck pond actually had a couple of visitors and it was lovely to see but unfortunately the pond leaks so does not stay full for long so the ducks are in for a surprise!

The calves were castrated, dehorned and ear tagged yesterday which is not a particularly pleasant job and one which I think makes Farmer Chris’ eyes water. Thanks also to Farmer Rob (Big Red) and younger Farmer Ollie for their help with this.

The bed and breakfast is still very busy despite the weather and it was nice to welcome back Helen and Boyd who helped us move some cattle across the lane. Boyd will be remembered for two reasons- one that he has a calf named after him and the other one for his very trendy dance which he believed help the chickens to go to bed. One dance my daughter Isobella will never forget!

Hectors House cottage is now almost fully booked until the end of August with lots of repeat visitors and bookings already being taken for 2013.

Farmer Chris is persevering this year with the vegetable garden and his raised beds. At the moments the thistles appear to be winning but he is very proud of his five French beans , a dozen beetroot and spring and red onions. No sign of any carrots or rocket appearing on the raised beds- perhaps they are waiting for the sunshine too.

Machines have let us down this week. The starter motor packing up on the quad bike, the hand brake lever snapping on the tractor and the door handle falling off. We also had to purchase a new lawn mower and for me the delights of a new vacuum cleaner!

Seven of our beef steers have been booked in for a TB movement test and will be one their way to  South West Waitrose stores. One will be coming back for our own consumption having been hung for three weeks.

Here’s hoping for a flaming June so that we can all make hay whilst the sun shines!

Music for pigs- Top of the Chops!
Wednesday, 09 May 2012 13:52

Farmer Chris read an interesting article in The Farmers Weekly last week which was a scientific study into pigs behaviour. Apparently the conclusion is that music is beneficial to their welfare. Easter- new life, bigger waistline!
Wednesday, 18 April 2012 12:39

Our first calves were born over the Easter weekend and our tradition now is to name them after our guests who are staying here at the time if they want us to. Some ladies have taken offence at the suggestion so not all want a cow named after them! We also had a few suggestions from our Twitter followers @Hayefarm and I must admit I thought Eggbert was a very clever contribution. We still have another five to go and I hope the births are all easy for the Mums to be.

Yesterday afternoon was spent with Farmer Chris, myself and daughter Isobella and a reluctant bull terrier called Barbara, who hates any form of exercise, moving the electric fence to the summer pasture for the rest of the herd.

Cynthia, our breeding sow, has had enough of her 9 piglets and it is quite a funny sight to see her running away from them when they are after more milk. She will be off to meet a very handsome boar next weekend. He is another rare breed Oxford Sandy and Black . The Oxford Sandy and Black breed have now been added to the 'Watch List' at the Rare Breed Survival Trust. This is a good thing as it means there will be funding available to help ensure the survival of the breed and reliable, tasty, succulent pork.

TB testing times- fingers and hooves crossed!
Tuesday, 13 March 2012 17:04

Well it has been a busy few weeks on the farm with the TB testing of our small  herd of Red Devons. Once the cows are all rounded up they go through our cattle crush which enables the handler to have better control of the individual and the vet takes a skin thickness measurement in two places and then injects avian TB into the upper place and bovine into the lower.

Three days later the cows are run through the crush again and the sites are re-measured for lumps. The vet is looking for a difference between the two measurements of 2 . If the bovine TB is greater than the avian TB by 2 or more then it requires investigation. Thankfully ours were all OK.

If one was to show a reaction that was of concern it would have to have been retested in 60 days. If there was  a confirmed case then the farm is closed down with very restricted movements.

We were due to have 8 calves dehorned between the two TB tests but to avoid further stress of the animals we have delayed this by a couple of weeks.

In all we let out 15 of the herd to join the 8 cows that have been out all winter and they expressed their delight by running around like lunatics with the odd skip and jump here and there.

Cynthia and her 9 celebrity chef piglets are all doing well and we hope to have them all outside by next week weather permitting.

Our bacon has now been removed from the back passage and sliced and packed and went down very well with our bed and breakfast guests who said it was the best bacon they have ever tasted but unfortunately could not take any back to Ireland.

10 little piggies and sausages galore!
Thursday, 23 February 2012 19:24

It has been a busy week on the farm with the main event being the birth of Cynthia's 10 little piggies. Mother and babies are doing well. There is one ginger one and the rest pink so following the suggestion from Davina we are calling the ginger one Heston and the remaining pink ones after celebrity chefs too- so we have Hix, Valentine, Marco, Delia, Jamie, Rick, Sophie, Nigella and of course Hugh!

One of our beef steers has been poorly this week with suspected lung worm so the whole herd has been treated and our poorly steer given antibiotics and anti inflammatories  as a precautiion against pneumonia.

Farmer Chris and I have packed up just over 600 sausages today and are also attempting to dry cure our own bacon for the first time. I will let you know the results next week as the pork has to be stored in containers for five days and also rubbed with a mix of salt and sugar  for the next 4 days and then hung for 5-6 days after this procedure.
